WWFW – Vintage Silaflex Fly Rod – 8F 752 – (actually 7′ 7″ )
Based on vintage Silaflex fiberglass rod history, an 8-foot-listed rod that measures closer to 7’8″ is likely one of the pre-Browning (1950s-early 1960s) Pacific Laminates models or a model designed with an interchangeable butt section that creates a shorter configuration
- While listed slightly differently, this “odd” three-piece rod came with a removable 18-inch section, allowing it to be configured as a 6’3″ rod or a 7’9″ rod.
- Before Browning acquired the company in 1962, rod lengths were not always strictly standardized. Many vintage glass rods were marketed as 8-footers but measured differently based on manufacturing tolerances, ferrules, or repairs.
- In the fiberglass community, many 8-foot rods from the 1950s/60s (including brands like South Bend or early Silaflex) that are touted as 8-footers are frequently discovered to be closer to 7’7″ or 7’8″ when measured with modern precision, partly due to the metal ferrule system
